![]() Rick managed to prevent the two sides from going to war shortly before his death, but the same basic tensions remain. The Commonwealth storyline is far from done in the comic. His death in the comic may make that less of a concern. The biggest challenge for the TV series is in finding out how to generate conflict between Alexandria and the Commonwealth without Rick serving as one of the main catalysts of the plot. Rick isn't actually dead in the show, but most of the characters believe him to be following his heroic sacrifice in Season 9. Rick's death may help provide a guide post for the TV series as it slowly transitions toward the Commonwealth conflict. The question is how the TV series will handle the debut of the Commonwealth without Rick Grimes at the forefront. From there, the TV series will probably shift toward introducing the Commonwealth, a massive, prosperous settlement that has fueled the comic's stories for the last two years. Right now the TV series is the midst of adapting the Whisperers storyline that dominated the comic several years ago. There's little reason to assume that trend won't continue. But while the journey is often very different from version to version, the destination is usually the same. It also places a heavy emphasis on Daryl Dixon, a character who (as far as we know) doesn't even exist in the comics. The TV series has diverged from the source material in some pretty significant ways, of course, making its own choices about which characters to kill off and when. The TV series has tended to follow the same basic path as the comic, covering similar storylines like the stay at Hershel Greene's farm, the prolonged conflict with the Governor at Woodbury and the devastating war against Negan and the Saviors. In general, the comic book and TV versions of The Walking Dead have a fairly close relationship.
